September

Festival season has begun in India.  Last week was Lord Krishna's birthday. Part of the festivities of the occasion is a human pyramid being formed at the various housing complexes (they call them societies) what would be an apartment complex in the west.  These human pyramids are trying to reach a clay pot full of curd (yogurt) and ghee (clarified butter) hung and decorated with flowers, fruits.  The pot also has money in it, one such pot had 11 lakh (Rs 100,000) - not going to do conversion for you.

There are professional human pyramid groups with uniforms and all participating in Dahi Handi (dahi mean curd and handi pot).  I will give you my much simplified but accurate meaning of event.  Lord Krishna was a micheveous child, he loved curd and ghee and would climb up to steal them from pots hanging in the air.  got it!  like I said simplified.  it was fun to watch.  I went to Sanjana's building, they did not have the 'professinals' come but they local teenagers/ young men built the pyramid.  It was fun, a band with drums adn cymbols played... most of the buildings accupants came outside to watch or from their windows.

This pyramid was all males and most of the trucks driving around town with 30 to 40 professionals in the back were men. But a friend from work said at her 'society' there was a male pyramid and seperate female! It took several attempts for the group to make it successfully to 4 teirs (the mumbai record is 8!) But when the finally did the tip top climber pulled a cocunut out of the pot and broke the pot curd and ghee flew all over the pyramid! A water hose had been spraying the pyramid team on and off during the 1 and 1/2 hour of attempts to reach the pot.

Next week is the start of Ganapati, celebration for lord Ganesh. At work they will have a puja (prayer) the day before it starts.  I have bought a saree (blue of course) to wear for the occasion.  I might the post pictures!
